Foods to reduce cholesterol

High level LDL or bad cholestrol cause heart disease. The following are the foods that increase HDL or good cholestrol.

Fenugreek or Methi
Fenugreek or Methi plays a role in reducing the cholestrol that help to reduce body's absorption of cholestrol coming through fat-rich foods.

How to use:
1. You can add a pinch of fried Fenugreek powder in your curries. If you can take slight bitter then you can also add 1 table spoon of fried Fenugreek powder.
2. Add one teaspoon of this powder to hot or cold water and take once or twice in a day.

Flaxseeds or Alsi
Flaxseeds are high in Fiber. They are good choice if you want to loose weight quickly. The fiber in Flaxseeds binds with cholesterol preventing the body to absorb the cholesterol. It also helps to reduce the hydertension and coronary artery disease.

How to use:
1. Grind flaxseeds and add the powder into your food towards the end of the cooking process. Although it will not be damaged by heat, the fiber present in the flaxseeds can absorb liquid and cause a thickening of the gravy if added early in the cooking process.
2. Sprinkle a little flaxseed powder over breakfast cereals, cooked vegetables, or mix in with your chutney powder.
3. You can make a powder out of Alsi seeds and prepare ladoos, which you can find in a typical indian hoome.

Garlic
Garlic reduces LDL cholesterol, prevents a rise of blood pressure and also avoids the deposition of plaque on the walls of arteries, reducing chances of heart attack and stroke, and controls acidity to form. When I came to Germany in 2005, I watched a TV-Show showing a 110 year old man. The secret of his health was he drinks a small cup of Garlic water every morning.

How to use:
1. Crush few cloves of Garlic and add it into your curries and gravies if you cannot bear.
2. If you bear the raw flavour of Garlic, you can take it directly.
3. Lemon or tamarind will destroy the garlic's action. If you want to use garlic along with lemon or tamarind juice, you can crush or chop garlic and leave it for 5 minutes (to activate the beneficial compound called allicin) and then use it in your lemon or tamarind mixed curries.
4. Avoid microwaving or boiling entire garlic cloves because this can destroy the garlic benefits.

Onions
Researchers have linked quercetin of onions with increased levels of HDL cholesterol as well as low levels of LDL cholesterol.

How to use:
1. Consume onion raw in the form of salads.
2. If you can manage the raw smell of onion, just cut the onions without steaming and extract the juice and drink, or mix in a few other vegetables while juicing.

Nuts
Eating raw nuts such as almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts and walnuts which are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids with out adding salt or sugar.

How to use:
1. Eating few nuts is good but counterproductive is eating to many which may cause weight gain.

Fish
Certain species of fish such as Herring, salmon, mackerel, sardines, halibut and lake trout are healthy omega-3 fatty acids that reduce LDL cholesterol and protect the heart. These species of fish also help increase HDL cholesterol.

How to use:
1. Grill the fish or bake it. frying it will only add to the unhealthy fat content of your food.

Beans and Oats
Beans are high in fiber and they help to reduce the amount of cholestrol absorption in diet. Oats also high in fiber and they bring about reduction in levels of LDL Cholestrol.
